Farba Ngom : levée de son immunité parlementaire, abstention surprise chez Pastef
Farba Ngom, the mayor and member of parliament for Agnam, was brought from his cell to be questioned by the National Assembly's ad hoc committee tasked with examining the request to lift his parliamentary immunity submitted by the Minister of Justice, Yassine Fall. According to L'Observateur, the Alliance for the Republic (APR) official "defended himself well before the eleven members of the committee."
At his request, he physically attended the session. Dressed in a traditional white boubou and escorted by three security guards, he arrived before the scheduled start of the proceedings at 10 a.m.
When questioned by rapporteur Youngar Dione about the discovery of cell phones in his cell, the parliamentarian maintained that the responsibility lay with the prison administration. He argued that the law punishes the person who smuggles the prohibited item, not the inmate who receives it. "I was inside my cell, not outside," he insisted, according to the newspaper of the Future Media Group.
Regarding the contents of the devices, he claimed to have remained without access for ten days, denying any involvement in the images or data in question.
Alongside him, his lawyer and fellow MP, Aïssata Tall Sall, denounced the proceedings as "illegal and unfounded." The president of the Takku Wallu parliamentary group believes that the action targeting an MP already in pretrial detention since February 27 for alleged money laundering and fraud is tainted by irregularities.
A vote marked by dissent within the majority
After several hours of intense debate, punctuated by a five-minute recess requested by the chairman of the parliamentary majority group, Ayib Daffé, for consultation, the Commission reached its decision. The vote confirmed the prevailing trend but revealed a significant surprise: of the 11 Commission members, 8 voted to lift the immunity, while 2 voted against. A prominent member of the Pastef party abstained. According to L'Observateur, citing reliable sources, he himself had expressed reservations during the debates, believing that the procedural flaws raised by the defense were well-founded.
