Interdiction du Niakhtou national : «L’opposition pouvait choisir un autre jour», Maurice Soudieck Dione
Professor Maurice Soudieck Dione, a professor of political science, commented on the debate surrounding the ban on the national Niakhtou festival. A guest on the RTS program “Point de vue” on November 9th, he deemed this coincidence a “pointless provocation.”
"November has 30 days; the opposition could have chosen another day," he said, adding that the political climate would benefit from moving away from these confrontational approaches.
Professor Dione reminded everyone that democracy is not built on constant confrontation, but on shared responsibility. "A double mobilization on the same day could have generated security tensions and uncontrollable excesses," he added.
Mr. Dione argues that the opposition has an essential role to play in maintaining democratic balance. "It is the opposition that allows the majority to question itself and avoid abuses of power."
He also emphasized that the new government, led by PASTEF, is still enjoying a period of grace linked to the maturity of the Senegalese people. "Citizens know that a period of adjustment is necessary before evaluating a government. This patience has always characterized our political tradition," he reminded them.
According to the political scientist, the reforms undertaken require time to produce visible effects. "There is a gap between the timeframe of policies and that of social expectations," he stated, adding that the government currently retains its legitimacy.
"Unpopularity is inevitable, but it has not yet reached a critical threshold. The country especially needs serenity to move forward," he concluded.
