La Coalition Ensemble pour Demain alerte sur une crise économique et politique majeure
The "Together for Tomorrow" Coalition, coordinated by Ms. Adji Mergane Kanouté, published a statement received by Seneweb in which it expresses its concern about the current economic and political situation in Senegal.
According to the coalition, the country is experiencing a "major" economic crisis, exacerbated by a public debt deemed excessive and described by the current regime as "hidden debt." This situation, according to the government, has led to a severe downgrade of the country's credit rating and a state of near-bankruptcy.
The coalition denounces a "financial peril" that is profoundly weakening the national economy and plunging households into extreme poverty. It specifically points to:
- The precipitous drop in purchasing power,
- The closure of numerous private businesses,
- The increase in unemployment,
- Increasing social and family stress.
Faced with this situation, the Economic and Social Recovery Plan (PRES) proposed by the government is perceived by the coalition as a glimmer of hope "although its effects remain limited," the note specifies.
Beyond the economic difficulties, the coalition is concerned about the political rift between the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister. This tension, it believes, threatens to destabilize the state apparatus and undermine the confidence of financial institutions and investors.
The coalition is therefore calling on the Head of State to fully assume his responsibility as "Father of the Nation" and "Protector of citizens", in order to avoid dragging the country into a new crisis, while that of 2021-2024 is still fresh in people's memories.
In a context also marked by the jihadist threat at the borders, Ensemble pour Demain insists on the need to preserve national stability. It advocates for:
- The restoration of democratic dialogue, respect for the rights and freedoms of citizens, fair and equitable accountability, and profound and inevitable judicial reforms.
The coalition concludes by stating that "only responsible and inclusive governance will allow Senegal to overcome this dual economic and political crisis".
