La Senelec contrôle WAE : Harouna Dia, Ousmane Sonko et l’appel de Ouagadougou
Senelec, which held 15% of the capital, has become the sole shareholder of West African Energy (WAE), the company that built the 366 MW power plant at Cap des Biches. This transaction increases the company's capital from 4 billion to 16 billion CFA francs and, more importantly, saves a project that had stalled due to legal disputes between its shareholders.
In remarks reported by L'Observateur, Harouna Dia, until then the main shareholder of WAE, recalled the role he played in resolving this matter. "He specified that he himself had approached Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko in Ouagadougou to help resolve the dispute that was paralyzing the management of the power plant," reports the newspaper of the Future Media Group.
It was in May 2025. During a meeting between Sonko, who was visiting Burkina Faso, and the Senegalese community based there, Harouna Dia, speaking on behalf of his compatriots in Burkina Faso, pleaded for the Prime Minister's intervention to resolve the WAE case. "I was the first to call on him for help, and he helped us a great deal, and he continues to do so," the businessman recalled, referring to a meeting with the head of government in December 2024.
According to L'Observateur's report at the time, Sonko had "taken note of the concerns expressed by Harouna Dia while reiterating his determination to safeguard Senegalese interests if they were to be threatened."
