Le FDR exige le retrait d’Ousmane Sonko de l’Assemblée nationale
The Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) denounces what it calls a "parliamentary coup" orchestrated by the ruling party. In a statement sent to Seneweb, the coalition considers the former Prime Minister's return to the National Assembly to be both "illegal and illegitimate."
The FDR welcomes the mobilization of the nation's vital forces against this initiative. According to the coalition, 147 political parties and movements have already signed a joint declaration dated May 24, 2026, opposing this initiative. It also applauds the referral of the matter to the Constitutional Council by opposition members of parliament, considering this action a fight for democracy and institutional stability.
At the heart of the controversy lies the interpretation of Article LO172 of the Electoral Code. The FDR maintains that a minister elected as a member of parliament loses their parliamentary seat if they do not resign from the government within eight days. The coalition accuses PASTEF of attempting to circumvent this provision through an amendment to the National Assembly's rules of procedure.
According to the FDR, the Constitution, specifically Article 54, requires that any return of a government member to Parliament be governed by an organic law. The coalition believes that such a reform should have been incorporated into the Electoral Code, not the National Assembly's internal regulations.
The FDR therefore considers that the new provisions adopted violate the Constitution, the Electoral Code, and the rules of procedure of the National Assembly. It asserts that Senegalese law does not recognize, under the conditions invoked, the mechanism used to allow the former head of government's return to the assembly.
In response to this situation, the coalition is calling for the annulment of the act adopted by the National Assembly and demanding the removal of Ousmane Sonko from the list of deputies. It believes that respect for the Constitution and the laws is essential for preserving peace, security, and democracy in Senegal.
The FDR is finally launching an appeal to the country's vital forces to agree on a common action plan aimed at preventing any violation of the laws and preserving the institutions of the Republic.
