Mbaye Dionne : «Si demain l’AFP devait présenter un candidat à la Présidentielle, ce serait… »
A guest on iRadio's "Sunday Jury," the new secretary general of the Alliance of Progressive Forces (AFP) discussed his career, his closeness to Moustapha Niasse, and the challenges facing his party in the context of the economic and social crisis.
Faced with the majority resulting from the 2024 change of government, MP Mbaye Dione intends to position the AFP as a structured opposition force. "We will organize ourselves to embody a credible alternative. Senegal needs to restore the rule of law and regain a dynamic economy," he says.
For him, the AFP is now the only party, apart from Abdoul Mbaye's Alliance for Citizenship and Work (ACT), to have held a democratic congress. A legitimacy he claims over other political forces. "If tomorrow the AFP were to present a presidential candidate, I can say, without hesitation, that it would be my humble self. The activists want it and many are coming back to us," he says.
He also reaches out to dissidents and other socialist movements, advocating for generational renewal. "All parties that emerged from socialism must organize their internal alternation. Only then can we, together, create a credible new proposition."
Indeed, the congress of April 26, 2025, held in Ngor Diarama, before more than 6,000 delegates, sealed his appointment as head of the party. "It was a historic moment. I made a commitment not to do less than President Niasse, but in a context of modernization, with a new generation," emphasizes Dionne, who aims to bring together "the progressive and socialist family" to build an alternative.
Furthermore, he acknowledges that he owes a great deal to the former president of the National Assembly and founder of AFP. "Moustapha Niasse taught me what the state is, what a political party is, and above all, the importance of being intellectually and financially independent. To be respected in politics, you have to have a profession, a job, and take care of your family," he confides.
In him, he finds "a benevolent guide, available for advice, but never imposing." "For a long time, he thought I was one of the people capable of leading the party. But he always refused to impose his voice. Consensus came naturally," he assures.
