Modou Diagne Fada alerte : « La démocratie est en recul, les voix critiques sont muselées »
A guest on iRadio's Jury du Dimanche program, former minister and political leader Modou Diagne Fada expressed serious concerns about the state of freedoms in Senegal since April 2024. Regarding justice, he said he was worried about the "decline in freedom of expression" following the recent arrests of journalists and activists. According to him, the country is experiencing a democratic decline marked by the repression of dissenting voices. "All Senegalese people see that the government is seeking to impoverish those who speak out, critical voices. You can't count the number of prisoners of conscience," he said.
He cited Assane Diouf, Abdou Nguer, Badara Gadiaga, and Doudou Koulibaly, among others, most of whom are in prison for, he says, "opinion crimes." Fada believes that "all critical voices are in danger of imprisonment" and denounces a strategy aimed at forcing citizens into silence. For him, this is a direct threat to stability. "What makes Senegal strong is freedom of expression. Letting people speak gives them the keys to be appeased and avoid other forms of action." While he defends freedom of expression, Modou Diagne Fada nevertheless calls for the responsible use of public speech. He rejects foul language and insists on the need to raise the level of debate. "I respect everyone's style, but I cultivate responsibility. I will never oppose as some have done in the past, because that doesn't solve problems," he says.
Regarding accusations of spreading "fake news," he points out that the courts rarely uphold this charge against those charged, believing that it is often a pretext for intimidation.
Modou Diagne Fada also criticized the excessive promises made to the Senegalese by certain political figures. According to him, this overbidding has ended up discrediting the political class. "They have said so much, promised so much, manipulated so much... Today, they have things in their hands and it's exploding everywhere," he insisted. For the former minister, only the truth, even if it's hard to hear, can restore people's confidence and consolidate democracy. "I will never tell untruths to seduce young people or to seek election," he concluded.

Où était sa "conscience démocratique" lorsque ses alliés politiques réprimaient des opposants ? Son silence d'hier rend son indignation d'aujourd'hui complètement vide de sens.
Il ne s'agit pas d'un cri du cœur pour la démocratie, mais d'une tentative désespérée de se refaire une virginité politique. Fada se positionne en victime du système alors qu'il en a été l'un des principaux bénéficiaires. C'est le comble du cynisme.

À propos de démocratie, vous n'avez jamais sû ce que s'était la démocratie pour avoir fait tout ce que vous avez fait dans ce pays. Vous étiez juste à côté d'un homme politique qui avait choisi de vous laisser sucer le sang des sénégalais, juste pour que vous lui foutez la paix de dérouler ce qu'il voulait.
Pourquoi on ne 'a pas mis en prison moi. Comme si on emprisonnait 'importe QUI au pays.
