Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced an immediate tightening of the rules governing official travel by directors general and public officials. He denounced what he considered an excessive level of government spending in the current macroeconomic context. Speaking before members of parliament during the question period at the National Assembly on Friday, May 22, 2026, the head of government revealed that he had already taken drastic measures to restrict the travel of cabinet members. "I have blocked ministers' travel for some time now," he stated. However, he added, budget overruns persist in certain directorates general and public agencies.
The Prime Minister criticized repeated foreign missions, deeming them unjustified given the nation's priorities. "Over three months, some directors general spent 33 days abroad out of 90; others 15 days, and still others 20 days," he revealed to attentive members of parliament. Faced with this situation, Ousmane Sonko announced the implementation of a new oversight mechanism. From now on, all travel by directors general must be submitted to his approval. "I have requested that all travel by directors general now be subject to my review," he stated firmly.
This decision, he explained, is part of a broader effort to streamline public spending and drastically reduce government expenditures, as the country faces significant financial pressure. The Prime Minister emphasized the absolute necessity for budget managers and agency heads to demonstrate frugality, restraint, and exemplary conduct in the management of public resources.
