Ousmane Sonko : « Nous sommes entrés dans une nouvelle phase de notre histoire politique »
Four days after his dismissal by the head of state Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye as head of government and after his election as president of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko spoke out on the political crisis.
The newly elected president of the National Assembly warned: “We have entered a new phase in our political history. It will be difficult.” “It will be marked by tensions, attempts at division, and multiple pressures. But it can also become a moment of democratic maturation.”
"We must demonstrate that fidelity to principles is stronger than opportunistic calculations."
The leader of Pastef/Les Patriotes argued that "we must prove that an African people can debate firmly without destroying their own state." "We must demonstrate that fidelity to principles is stronger than opportunistic calculations," he declared.
Then, Ousmane Sonko extended his hand "to all the members of this Assembly, majority and opposition alike. Because above party affiliations, there is a higher requirement: to preserve the Republic."
According to him, "history will remember less the positions held than the principles defended in decisive moments." He suggested that in such moments, the only real question remains the same: when power puts us to the test, do we choose comfort or truth? For my part, I will continue to choose truth.
