Upon returning from his leave, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko participated in today's Council of Ministers meeting. He dedicated his remarks to the Government's policy on historical memory. He began by outlining the directives and actions already taken in this area, before addressing the promotion of Senegal's historical heritage and the perpetuation of the achievements of this policy.
In the document resulting from this meeting, which was made public, "the Prime Minister particularly emphasized several strategic projects, including the construction of the Archives House, the National Library and libraries in the regions, the erection of a Memorial in Thiaroye in honor of the Senegalese riflemen, the creation of a Documentation and Research Center dedicated to the ''Senegalese Riflemen'', the teaching of the history of the Thiaroye Massacre in Senegalese schools, the annual celebration of a Rifleman's Day, as well as the creation of the National Council for Memory and the Management of Historical Heritage (CNMGPH) and the Documentation Center at the Thiaroye Cemetery."
He also recalled the solemn tribute paid to Professor Amadou Makhtar Mbow on October 28, 2025, as well as the upcoming celebration of the second edition of the commemoration of the Thiaroye Massacre.
For the Prime Minister, "the enhancement of memorial heritage is a necessity. It rests both on historical narrative and on the erection of symbols. With regard to the historical narrative, it is a matter of highlighting the emblematic figures of the country and restoring historical facts to their authenticity and objectivity. As for the symbols, they must constitute a permanent reminder of national history and play a major role in tourism promotion."
In this perspective, Ousmane Sonko mentioned "the creation of historical museums of traditional kingdoms, like that of Dekheulé, as well as in historical sites such as Pathé Badiane (Paos Koto), Yang Yang, Ndorna (Fouladou) and Nder".
He also highlighted the importance of building the National Library, considered an essential tool for reclaiming collective memory and a repository of national documentary heritage, as well as the construction of the Archives House.
