Société civile et opposition : Thierno Bocoum appelle à une nouvelle responsabilité politique

The role of civil society and the ongoing restructuring of the Senegalese opposition were at the heart of iRdio's "Sunday Jury." Guest Thierno Bocoum, speaking of political repositioning, explained that the country is entering a pivotal phase where each actor must redefine their role.

For the former parliamentarian and president of the Agir movement, Senegalese civil society must remain faithful to its mission of democratic monitoring. He points out that its primary role is neither to serve as a stepping stone to power nor to replace political parties, but to "defend principles and citizens, regardless of who governs."

According to him, part of civil society has weakened itself by compromising itself politically or seeking excessive closeness with successive regimes. "Civil society must regain its moral strength, its independence, and its role as a warning," he argues. He then calls for a "civil society of conviction," capable of denouncing abuses, proposing alternatives, but also educating citizens about democratic culture and accountability.

The opposition at the time of recomposition

The former parliamentarian observes that the emergence of a new power led by the former opposition is reshuffling the cards in the political arena. "Many parties find themselves disoriented, between cautious support and cautious opposition," he notes. For him, this transition period must be an opportunity to rebuild the Senegalese opposition around a clear and coherent project. "The opposition must not limit itself to criticism. It must embody a credible alternative, based on ideas, values, and a program," he insists.

He warns against the temptation of political opportunism and alliances of circumstance: "The people no longer need improvised coalitions, but organized forces, carrying a vision for the country."

Towards a new democratic maturity

Thierno Bocoum believes that Senegal has reached a level of civic awareness that demands greater responsibility from its political and social actors. "Civil society, political parties, unions, the media: everyone must play their part to consolidate democracy and avoid authoritarian or populist excesses," he asserts.

In this context, he calls for a renewed national dialogue, where differences would no longer be perceived as threats, but as contributions to the vitality of public debate. "The break is first and foremost a moral requirement, a new relationship with truth, transparency, and responsibility," he concluded.
