Sonko sur la justice : « Nous avons besoin de magistrats sérieux, pas des comploteurs »
Ousmane Sonko spoke at length about the issue of justice, which he considers one of the most sensitive and urgent challenges facing the state, during Martyrs' Day. He emphasized the need to reform the judiciary to guarantee credible procedures and protect democracy. "The country has been trapped, especially in the area of justice," he said.
According to Sonko, the delays and frustrations expressed by some activists stem from the current state of the judicial system. “We inherited a country mired in problems in every area, especially in the justice system. As long as the justice system remains unchanged, no authority, however well-intentioned, will be able to achieve what you hope for so quickly.” He points out that the justice system operates according to strict procedures and specific bodies, making any impulsive or arbitrary action impossible.
Replacing some magistrates, strengthening credibility
The political leader believes that some of the problems stem from the current composition of the judiciary. “The justice system needs to be cleaned up. Some judges must be replaced. We need serious, competent, and patriotic judges.” He clarifies, however, that these changes are not the sole prerogative of the Minister of Justice. “Even Yacine Fall, despite his determination, cannot decide alone. Appointments and transfers are decided at the level of the High Council of the Judiciary.”
A call for rigor, not for haste
Sonko emphasizes that seeking justice for victims requires methodical investigations. “We can name names, but we need evidence at every level: those who committed abuses, those who ordered them, those who covered them up. No judicial decision can be decreed.” He cautions against unrealistic expectations: judicial reform is complex, but essential. For Sonko, rebuilding the justice system is indispensable to restoring public trust. “We want a strong, impartial, and respected justice system. A justice system where judges can make decisions without fear, pressure, or calculation,” he says.
He concluded by calling for patience and support: the reform will be gradual, but crucial for the stability of the country.
