Succession de Barthélémy Dias : de retour de voyage ce lundi, Khalifa Sall face à une équation à trois inconnues
The Dakar City Council is meeting this Monday to set the date for the election of the capital's new mayor. Since Barthélémy Dias's dismissal, Ngoné Mbengue (Taxawu) has been acting as interim mayor. The Dakar prefect, contacted by the Minister of Local Authorities, has invited the latter to decide the matter. The process has begun.
Negotiations for Dias's succession are underway. Taxawu wants to retain his seat. The dismissed mayor intends to weigh in on the debates, while the Pastef government is determined to turn the tables and impose its champion.
No official candidacy has been declared. But within Taxawu Senegal, two names are emerging. According to Les Échos, in addition to Ngoné Mbengue, Babacar Mbengue, mayor of Hann-Bel Air, is vying for the seat. A crack in Khalifa Sall's movement.
"Two groups are emerging within the ranks of Taxawu Senegal," the newspaper reports. "Those who support Ngoné Mbengue are arguing the case of Soham Wardini—interim mayor and then permanent mayor after Khalifa Sall's dismissal in 2018—and others believe that the latter lacks the stature to lead the town hall."
In the second group, one voice spoke to Les Échos in favor of the mayor of Hann-Bel Air: "I have nothing against Ngoné Mbengue, but Babacar Mbengue's candidacy is more than legitimate. He is a great intellectual, he has the charisma and the ability to lead the City of Dakar."
Khalifa Sall, who is returning from a trip abroad, according to Les Echos, must resolve this equation. "I hope he makes the right choice," prays a member of Taxawu for the newspaper.
But the same source was quick to point out that the equation facing the former mayor of Dakar includes a third unknown: the case of Barthélémy Dias. A former leading figure in Taxawu, the dismissed mayor left Khalifa Sall's movement to strike out on his own, under the banner of "Senegal Bi Gnou Bokk." And by breaking away, he reportedly left with at least five Taxawu advisors in his luggage, Les Échos believes.
Alioune Tall, one of Dias's close associates, interviewed by the daily newspaper, said that the latter intends to discuss with all the political forces present on the Municipal Council, including Pastef, before adopting a position.
