Tivaouane : La mairie et les commerçants du marché de Keur Matar à couteaux tirés
By decision of the Tivaouane town hall, the Keur Matar municipal market will be closed to the public from October 9 to 19, 2025, for cleaning, disinfection, and general restoration operations. "No," replied the traders, who decried the measure as "unjustified."
According to the municipal decree, any commercial activity or installation of tables and stalls will be strictly prohibited inside and in the immediate vicinity of the market. The work will be carried out by municipal technical services, in collaboration with the market management committees, the National Waste Management Company (SONAGED), and the hygiene department. The reopening is scheduled for Monday, October 20, after verification of the health compliance of the premises by the relevant services, the document states.
For the town hall, this closure is part of a public health and health prevention policy, in compliance with current regulations. This decision comes amid tensions between the municipality and traders at the Keur Matar market, located in a working-class neighborhood of Tivaouane.
About ten days ago, the latter announced the suspension of municipal tax payments, denouncing what they called "prolonged negligence" on the part of the town hall. They demanded urgent measures to secure and clean up this vital economic center for the municipality. The traders deplored the fact that "the market has no gate, no lighting, and no security guard, which is leading to an increase in thefts."
Lamine Dème, the market delegate, also pointed out the lack of regular cleaning as the cause of the growing unsanitary conditions in the area. "The toilets are unusable and the market area is covered in mountains of garbage, hence the health risks for users and local residents," he stressed.
