Une ancienne députée recadre Seydi Gassama : "La République n'est pas un tribunal médiatique"
"Mr. Seydi Gassama, your recent statement against the potential candidacy of President Macky Sall for the position of UN Secretary-General, as well as your injunctions to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, call into question every citizen committed to republican principles, peace, and stability. Attempting to dictate Senegal's foreign policy under the influence of emotion or activism is a perilous approach for our nation."
These are the words of former MP Maïmouna Sène, member of the Executive Secretariat of the Alliance for the Republic (APR), in response to a recent statement by the executive director of the Amnesty International section in Senegal, Mr. Seydi Gassama.
The former parliamentarian points out that the role of a head of state is to conduct diplomacy that enhances the country's standing. "Thus, a Senegalese at the helm of a major global institution like the UN is not only a source of pride but, above all, a victory for our diplomacy," she says. According to Ms. Sène, asking the President of the Republic "not to endorse President Macky Sall's candidacy is an error in judgment."
For her, "by accusing President Macky Sall, Mr. Seydi Gassama is overstepping his role as a human rights defender and entering the political arena." She also reminded him, "You are surely aware that the justice system follows procedures." That is why, she told him, "making serious accusations without a final judgment, while demanding immediate sanctions, is a form of summary justice that undermines the rule of law you claim to defend."
He continued: "Mr. Gassama, let us work to pacify the political space for the stability of our country, in accordance with our motto: One People - One Goal - One Faith"
