Cancer : 12 000 nouveaux cas enregistrés par an au Sénégal
Senegal records nearly 12,000 new cases of cancer each year, said cancer surgeon Ahmadou Dème on Wednesday, during a round table organized on the occasion of International Cancer Day, commemorated on February 4.
"The risk of cancer incidence in our country is around 11%, that is almost 12,000 new cases per year or one in ten people is likely to have cancer in their lifetime," explained Mr. Dème, a member of the Senegalese Cancer Society (Sosecan), to APS.
The specialist stressed that, despite progress in data collection, incidence and mortality remain a concern, with several major cancers among the most frequent.
The Director General of Health, Professor Ousmane Cissé, confirmed these trends, indicating that cervical, breast, liver, prostate and stomach cancers are among the most frequent in Senegal, while calling for increased early detection and access to care.
