Coopération médicale : Mercy Ships annonce un ancrage durable au Sénégal
Following a meeting with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye this Tuesday at the Presidential Palace, the Executive Director of the NGO Mercy Ships, Michelle White, formalized a new strategic partnership. The humanitarian organization's hospital ships will no longer make sporadic visits, but will now return to Dakar on a regular schedule.
"We are here to solidify a new partnership with the Republic of Senegal in which we intend to bring our hospital ship back as quickly as possible, but to bring it back regularly," Michelle White told RTS after her meeting with the Head of State.
This approach will allow the organization's flagship vessels, the Global Mercy and the Africa Mercy, to take turns patrolling Senegalese waters.
For the Senegalese health system, this regularity is a boon in that it allows for better planning of major interventions and for a lasting reduction in surgical waiting lists.
While providing free surgical care remains Mercy Ships' core mission, this new protocol emphasizes sustainability. The NGO is therefore committed to a broad program of technology and expertise transfer to local practitioners.
"We will carry out medical capacity building projects in support of the various ministries concerned," said the head of Mercy Ships, as reported by Aps.sn.
In concrete terms, this will translate into mentoring sessions and technical training for Senegalese surgeons, nurses and biomedical technicians, in order to leave a concrete medical footprint long after the ships have left.
Moreover, during the NGO's intervention in 2023 in Senegal and Gambia, 736 patients from both countries benefited from free surgical operations and more than 750 health professionals from mentoring and/or training.
