Diabète : 20 % des 300 personnes dépistées sont positifs à Tivaouane
Of the 300 people screened, about 20% are diabetic, said Dr. Abdoulaye Ly, endocrinologist, diabetologist and nutritionist at the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital in Tivaouane, during a free screening day organized as part of the celebration of World Diabetes Day, in partnership with the Tivaouane Diabetics Association.
According to Dr. Ly, "the number of people with diabetes is increasing every year worldwide, as it is in Senegal. In Tivaouane and the Thiès region, the prevalence rate is 5.2%, one point higher than the national average of 4.2%. This high rate has prompted the hospital to institutionalize this day in order to raise awareness among the population about diabetes and cardiovascular diseases."
According to the specialist, "this screening day, which is in its second edition at the Mame Abdou hospital, provides an opportunity to exchange with the people of Tivaouane, especially since 70% of diabetics are not known."
He points out that early detection allows patients to live with diabetes well into old age without major difficulties, provided they follow the recommendations of specialists.
