Grossesse extra-utérine : une urgence médicale à ne pas négliger
Ectopic pregnancy remains one of the most serious gynecological emergencies. Still too little known by the general public, it can endanger women's lives if not treated promptly. According to specialists, it is a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality.
In an interview with Seneweb, Dr. Adama Barry, a general practitioner, discusses the causes, consequences, and possible treatments when this condition is detected early.
What is an ectopic pregnancy?
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterine cavity, most often in a fallopian tube.
"Ectopic pregnancy can be caused by several factors, including sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, endometriosis, peritoneal infections, smoking, a history of cesarean section with adhesions, malformations or obstruction of the fallopian tubes, as well as the insertion of an IUD," explains Dr. Barry.
The consequences for the woman
Besides the risk to life, this disease has significant repercussions on several levels:
Psychological and social: stress, anxiety related to the fear of infertility, feelings of guilt, weakening of the couple and the family.
Economically, treatment may require hospitalization and surgery, which often represents a significant cost for families. Delays in treatment, especially in cases of financial hardship or limited access to healthcare facilities, can lead to serious complications or even death.
Diagnosis and treatment
Early detection can save the patient's life.
"If an ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed early, medical treatment can stop the multiplication of cells. Otherwise, or if the diagnosis is late, surgery — sometimes with removal of the affected fallopian tube — becomes essential," explains Dr. Barry.
Prevention and awareness
The specialist emphasizes the importance of awareness and medical monitoring from the first signs of pregnancy:
"A prompt consultation and appropriate examinations can save lives," she concluded.
Ectopic pregnancy therefore remains a major public health problem. Better information and early medical monitoring are essential to reduce risks and protect women's lives.
