Hôpital Principal de Dakar : le nouveau directeur, Pr Coumba Diouf Niang, en cinq dates clés
Surgeon General Fatou Fall's successor at the helm of the military establishment has a career spanning some thirty years. Le Soleil revisited his career. Excerpts.
2025
Professor Coumba Diouf Niang was installed as Director General of the Dakar Main Hospital (HPD) on Tuesday, September 30. Until his appointment, this general practitioner, a surgeon specializing in orthopedics and trauma, was the coordinator of surgical services at the HPD.
2016
The year in which Professor Niang became full professor of war surgery and commander of the Army Health Service Application School; an establishment of which he has been the director of studies since 2013.
2012
He obtained his aggregation. He then became head of the orthopedics, traumatology and neurosurgery department at the Main Hospital.
2003
Professor Niang is a recognized surgeon at the military hospitals. This opens the way for him to take on various responsibilities, notably within the orthopedics, traumatology, and neurosurgery department of the Main Hospital. Six years earlier, he was admitted to the competitive examination for assistant at the military hospitals, even occupying the position of deputy head of the operating room.
1994
He began his career as a military doctor after completing his thesis at UCAD. As a lieutenant, Professor Coumba Diouf Niang began his career at the Ouakam Hospital Infirmary (IHO). During his career, he was posted to Kaolack, Tamba, and Dakar. He has also carried out missions abroad, including in Rwanda and Liberia.

En tant qu’ancien du Lycée Lamine Gueye, comme moi, je ressens une grande fierté de voir l’une des nôtres accéder à une telle responsabilité. Cela fait des années que je ne l’ai pas revu, mais je garde un souvenir marquant : un jour, alors que j’emmenais un accidenté à l’hôpital, elle s’était occupée de ce patient avec une humilité, une disponibilité et une humanité exemplaires, sans rien attendre en retour.
C’est cette image d’une femme affable, compétente et profondément humaine que je garde d’elle. Cette consécration, elle la mérite amplement.
