Minnesota health officials are alarmed by the spread of what appears to be the largest outbreak of a sexually transmitted fungus ever recorded in the United States. According to information reported by USA Today, the state health department has revealed that more than 30 confirmed or suspected cases have been reported in the metropolitan area since February 2026.
The first case in this series was confirmed in July 2025, when a patient consulted for a persistent genital rash. The strain responsible was identified by experts as Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII (TMVII).
This fungus infects the skin and is mainly transmitted through direct contact, particularly during sexual intercourse or prolonged skin-to-skin contact. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that the infection can be deceptive: it is often confused with other conditions such as psoriasis or various sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
This diagnostic confusion is concerning because delayed treatment can lead to complications such as permanent scarring or secondary bacterial infections, while also promoting the spread of the fungus within the community.
The medical community first raised the alarm about this rare strain in June 2024 in New York. The case involved a man in his thirties who developed redness on his genitals and limbs after several trips to California and Europe.
