Infertilité au Sénégal : « Ce n’est pas toujours la femme »
In Senegal, male infertility remains a taboo subject, suppressed by deeply rooted social perceptions that associate virility with the ability to procreate. Yet, according to the WHO, in 40 to 50% of cases of infertility in couples, the cause is male.
The medical causes are varied: spermatogenesis disorders, poorly treated infections, varicoceles, hormonal or genetic abnormalities. But it is above all cultural barriers that weigh heavily: many men refuse to be diagnosed, preferring to blame their wives or resort to traditional practices, to the detriment of effective treatment.
The Observer gives voice to two men and a woman confronted with this reality, offering a human face to this silence.
Abdoulaye Fall, a 38-year-old trader, says: "After three years of childless marriage, everyone blamed my wife. It was when we consulted a doctor that we discovered I had a problem with low sperm counts. I was ashamed at first, but with my wife's support, I agreed to undergo treatment."
Adama Diop, a teacher, recounts a painful experience: "My husband categorically refused to do any tests. Even after my tests were normal, he claimed that the doctors were complicit. It was as if his pride was worth more than our relationship."
Mr. Diagne, for his part, shares a happier outcome: "We got married in 2020. After several checkups, we discovered that it was me who had an infection. It took me two and a half years to agree to go see a doctor. Today, my wife is finally pregnant."
These revelations reveal an urgent need to break the silence. Recognizing that men can also be affected allows for faster diagnosis, better care, and, above all, alleviates the suffering of thousands of couples living in doubt and silence.

Si l'enfant , lui-meme, n'est pas interessé par vos bricoles nocturnes là, il ne viendra certainement pas, c'est tout.
Et puis cessez de deranger les voisins!
