Kédougou : hôpital régional Amath Dansokho, pourquoi on lave les morts à l'eau minérale
At the Amath Dansokho Regional Hospital in Kédougou, as reported by L'Observateur in its Friday edition, the water has stopped flowing. This shortage, which has persisted for several months, has plunged the facility into an unprecedented health and humanitarian crisis, prompting the Autonomous Union of Doctors, Pharmacists and Dentists of Senegal (SAMES) to observe a work stoppage this Thursday, January 8.
The lack of water is affecting all services, including the morgue, the same source specifies. Quoted by the Groupe Futurs Médias newspaper, a family recounts having to buy 30 liters of mineral water to be able to perform the ritual washing of a relative, on a table still soiled with the blood of a previous body, the victim of an accident.
"Do you think this is normal?", a relative exclaimed, denouncing the total lack of hygiene and dignity in the handling of the deceased.
For healthcare staff, daily life has become a real challenge. Lacking running water, doctors and nurses are forced to resort to makeshift solutions: using hydroalcoholic gel or pure alcohol for hand hygiene, using saline solution intended for medical care, or even buying mineral water with their own funds, particularly in intensive care units.
The risk of nosocomial infections thus reaches a critical level, particularly in surgery, where washing patients before the procedure becomes impossible.
According to the hospital director, Youssouf Mbargane Gaye, the problem is structural. Built outside the city, the hospital is not connected to the SDE's public water distribution network and relies exclusively on two boreholes whose water levels have dropped significantly, to the point of no longer meeting daily needs estimated at 500 m³. Water deliveries by tanker trucks, limited to two trips per day, remain far from sufficient to ensure the normal operation of services.
The long-term solution would involve either connecting the hospital to the public water network located approximately four kilometers away, or drilling a third well, suggests the newspaper's source. However, the slow implementation of these options keeps the facility in a particularly worrying health crisis.
