La voix du Sénégal à Genève : Pour une Afrique "maîtresse" de sa santé
On the sidelines of the 79th World Health Assembly, which is being held from May 18 to 23, 2026 in Geneva, the Minister of Health, Dr. Ibrahima Sy, raised African ambitions high during a meeting devoted to the future Regional Strategic Plan (RSP) 2026-2030 of the WHO Africa.
Gathered around the theme "A New Era of Health for Africa: United Action for Vision 2035," several African ministers and experts in the sector discussed the continent's major health challenges. The WHO Regional Director for Africa presented the main directions of this new continental roadmap.
In his speech, the Senegalese Minister of Health welcomed the inclusive approach adopted by the WHO in the development of this document, particularly welcoming its convergence with the National Strategy for the Transformation of the Health System of Senegal, which is being finalized.
Dr. Sy made several strong recommendations: integrate the determinants of health through the "Health in all policies" approach, regulate digital transformation and artificial intelligence in the health sector, and build a strong and autonomous African pharmaceutical industry.
Minister Sy also advocated for the creation of African centers of excellence to limit medical evacuations abroad, for sovereign financing strategies and for guaranteed access to safe and affordable medicines, with particular attention to the fight against falsified products.
The 2026-2030 Regional Strategy will be submitted for adoption at the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, scheduled for August 2026 in Addis Ababa.
