Matam : Deux morts et deux cas guéris sur cinq confirmés
After Saint-Louis, where Rift Valley fever is present in several districts, the Matam region is also affected by the disease. In addition to two deaths, including one post-mortem case, five cases have been recorded in the three departments.
“The first confirmed case was reported on September 30, 2025, as part of syndromic surveillance with the 4S network (Syndromic Sentinel Surveillance System),” at the Agnam Civol health post, in the Matam health district.
The day after the notification, investigations identified 308 similar cases, four symptomatic contacts, and one suspected case detected in the PPS registers (7) during the period from September 1 to October 1.
"As investigations and contact tracing progressed, between October 3 and 6, 2025," it was noted, "two new suspected cases, with one case arriving and dying with fever, epistaxis and hematemesis, were identified and samples taken."
The Rift Valley Fever outbreak situation report, as of October 8, lists five confirmed cases, including two uncomplicated cases, in the region, with two cured cases and one death. No post-mortem deaths have been recorded.
During his stay in the region, the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene discussed strengthening vector control by activating the search for the main mosquito vector of the disease, monitoring its dynamics and ensuring that it is localized to facilitate the fight against the disease.
"Vector control plays a pivotal role in resilience, because the vector is circulating and we will have to find the breeding grounds in the compounds. We strongly advise people to sleep under treated mosquito nets and to use repellents for livestock to kill the vector," he recommended.
For prevention and treatment, Minister Ibrahima Sy insisted on strengthening community-based surveillance to detect simple cases, before announcing that in terms of treatment, hospitals and health centers are prepared to receive serious cases, in the absence of an epidemic treatment center (ETC), following an already established protocol.
As part of the response plan, the health authority also ordered the vaccination of livestock due to the transmission of the vector from livestock to humans and the contagion that can result from the handling of livestock and edible animal products.
Calling for collective vigilance, Ibrahima Sy, beyond technical measures, strongly advocated communication and engagement with the community to reduce the progression of the disease by raising awareness among the population on the modes of transmission of the disease, the causes as well as the factors of exposure and prevention.
Among the announced measures, the region will benefit from a mobile virology laboratory from the Pasteur Institute in Dakar. The unit, which will be located at the Matam regional hospital, will help analyze samples in order to initiate treatment for early case management.

Principaux faits
