Mbour, la santé en danger : POLIMED opère sans convention, le SAMES exige son départ du CHTMMB
Even after its contract expires in April 2025, a termination date notified to it on October 30, 2024, POLIMED continues to provide radiology services at the Mbour hospital. Meanwhile, patients are paying a heavy price: no CT scanner, repeated breakdowns, and delayed emergency care.
The local branch of the Autonomous Union of Doctors, Pharmacists and Dental Surgeons of Senegal (SAMES) at the Thierno Mouhamadoul Mansour Barro Hospital Center (CHTMMB) held a press conference to raise the alarm and denounce an "unjustifiable and dangerous" situation.
The SAMES union has alerted higher authorities to the "very worrying" situation in the hospital's radiology department. The union believes that the current malfunctions are seriously compromising patient care.
According to Dr. Ousmane Junior Dieng, a gynecologist-obstetrician, the management of the imaging center, long entrusted to POLIMED, an entity under the supervision of FONSIS, the state's financial arm, is expiring. The agreement between CHTMMB and POLIMED expired on April 3, 2025.
"The situation of the radiology department poses a real problem that should challenge our collective responsibility and conscience. There is no need to dwell at length on the history of the Medical Infrastructure Hubs (POLIMED), placed under the supervision of FONSIS, the financial arm of the State of Senegal. The agreement linking POLIMED to CHTMMB, relating to the design, operation and development of the medical imaging center, expired on April 3, 2025," explains Dr. Dieng.
He adds: "The hospital's Board of Directors, with the support of the social partners, unanimously decided not to renew the contract. This decision was formalized and transmitted to the relevant authorities on October 30, 2024. However, despite this breach of contract, POLIMED continues to operate within the hospital. The consequences for medical care are significant. Since November 2024, the hospital has been without a brain scanner, which is essential for managing strokes and head injuries, which are frequent in the Mbour region. Standard radiology, meanwhile, is plagued by repeated breakdowns and the lack of a reliable continuous service. Many patients are thus forced to turn to private facilities, sometimes in life-threatening emergencies."
According to Dr. Mouhamadou Lamine Dramé, president of the hospital's medical commission, the situation has worsened since October 7, 2025, when the imaging service was interrupted "unilaterally," leaving medical teams without support for nighttime emergencies.
The SAMES section deplores the deafening silence of the Ministry of Health and FONSIS in the face of this crisis. It calls on the authorities, including the President of the Republic, to intervene without delay. Failing this, the union warns that it will hold the authorities responsible for any incident or complication arising from these shortcomings.
The union demands that the management of the imaging center be returned to the hospital, in accordance with the principle of hospital autonomy. It announces its readiness to use "all means of union action" to obtain a lasting solution.
"Our means of work are threatened, as is the quality of care. We call on all staff and the population to mobilize. We will not accept that this situation continues," warns Dr. Dramé.
