Politique hospitalière : le syndicaliste Cheikh Seck contredit le ministre de la Santé
The Minister of Health recently stated that "if we succeed in hospital policy, we will have succeeded in health care." A statement that the Secretary General of the Federation of Health Workers (FDTS), Cheikh Seck, firmly rejects. "I do not share this opinion. If hospital policy develops, it means that health care has failed, because prevention is better than cure. I prefer not to get sick than to seek treatment," he insists.
Although he himself works in hospitals, Cheikh Seck says he fears the current direction of public health in Senegal, which he considers too hospital-focused and not enough on prevention.
According to him, epidemiological management should primarily aim to prevent, control and contain diseases, so that they do not occur or remain controllable from the moment they appear.
He recalls that "in the past, regions had solid services and prepared effectively for response."
Today, he laments, "the actors seem less ready to deal with the management of these pathologies."
He therefore calls for a multi-sectoral approach involving the Ministry of Livestock, the Hygiene Service and community relays, particularly for zoonotic epidemics.
Cheikh Seck also questions the lack of coordination within the health system. He says, "Is the health education service playing its role? I even wonder if there is a functional link between the minister and the Director General of Health, which should be the basis for coordination."
The union leader warns against the macrocephaly of the health pyramid, where the top grows at the expense of the bottom. "The more resources are concentrated on hospitals, the less we invest in prevention. However, true public health is built on the ground, closer to the population," he concludes.
