Ramadan : Pourquoi la datte est l'alliée idéale pour rompre le jeûne selon les experts

Dates, a staple at Iftar during Ramadan, are widely consumed by Muslims. Many choose to break their fast with one to three dates before their meal, a practice that has become a true tradition during this holy month.

But why choose dates to break the fast? Nutritionist-dietitian Djiby Samb sheds light on the nutritional benefits of this fruit, which is particularly popular during Ramadan.

According to him, this fruit primarily helps to quickly restore energy to the body after several hours of deprivation. "Dates contain approximately 70 to 75% carbohydrates (glucose and fructose), which allows for a rapid rise in blood sugar levels after several hours of fasting," he explains.

Beyond energy, they also provide essential elements for the body. "They also contain fibers that facilitate digestion and important minerals such as potassium and magnesium, useful for fluid balance, muscle function and reducing fatigue," explains the specialist.

Regarding quantity, Djiby Samb recommends moderation. "One to three medium dates are more than enough for iftar, providing approximately 40 to 70 kilocalories. Consuming more can quickly increase the glycemic load," he states.

After 12 to 14 hours without food, the body needs a gradual reintroduction of food. "Dates are particularly suitable after fasting because their sugar is quickly absorbed, their texture is easy to digest, and they help avoid the digestive shock that a heavy meal eaten immediately could cause," the nutritionist points out.

However, some people should exercise caution. "For people with diabetes, dates should be consumed in moderation, ideally one or two, combined with water and a source of protein such as milk or yogurt, while monitoring blood sugar levels after iftar," he recommends.

Between religious tradition and nutritional contribution, the date remains a preferred food for breaking the fast in a healthy and balanced way during this blessed month of Ramadan.
