Santé mentale: un taux de dépression de 43,2% et des envies suicidaires de plus 16% signalés à Kolda
The Kolda region (South) is facing a worrying mental health situation. According to the results of the 2024 STEPS survey on non-communicable diseases, 43.2% of residents suffer from depression, while more than 16% report having had suicidal thoughts.
Rates significantly higher than the national averages, at 36.6% and 13% respectively.
These figures were recalled by the deputy governor of the region, during a Regional Development Committee (CRD) meeting dedicated to the issue of mental health.
The administrative authority stressed the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing the need for collective mobilization to reverse the trend.
The factors explaining this situation are numerous. Economic insecurity, high unemployment, and a lack of opportunities for young people are among the main causes cited.
This contradiction is all the more striking given that Kolda is a region with strong agricultural and human potential, which is still largely under-exploited.
Faced with this situation, the local stakeholders in Kolda can count on the commitment of the Youth, Population and Development Network, which is leading the "Sama Yoon, Sama Kaddu" project.
Its Executive Director, Maguette Thiandoum, announced that the network intends to lead the fight through awareness-raising and local communication.
"Online media will be created to disseminate awareness and advocacy messages, in order to raise collective awareness and find sustainable solutions," he explained.
Beyond prevention, the care of the mentally ill remains a major challenge in Kolda. Hence the repeated calls by several local stakeholders for the creation of a psychiatric hospital in the region.
