Souveraineté pharmaceutique : Le Sénégal veut produire 50 % de ses médicaments, d’ici 2050. Vers la fin de la dépendance aux importations ?
Senegal wants to break its near-total dependence on imported medicines. Currently, 95% of pharmaceutical products consumed in the country are imported. But by 2050, the government aims to produce 50% of its medicine needs locally.
This strong commitment is part of the National Transformation Agenda and the pharmaceutical industry revival project led by the Management and Projects Unit. It was reaffirmed on Thursday, October 2, in Tivaouane, during the launch of the Regulatory Platform for the Supply Chain for Medicines and Other Health Products.
According to comments reported by "Le Soleil", the coordinator of the partnerships unit of the Senegalese Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (ARP), Doudou Sonko, stressed that the country now has all the tools to achieve this ambitious objective.
Established in 2022, the ARP is already recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a maturity level 3 agency, a rare distinction in French-speaking Africa, placing it among the continent's most trusted regulators. This recognition attests to its ability to approve, inspect, ensure pharmacovigilance, and control the quality of health products.
According to Mr. Sonko, the legal framework is already in place to support the development of local production. The ARP has enabled Senegalese pharmaceutical companies to develop around twenty drugs that will soon be manufactured and distributed in the country.
But this transition will not happen without collective mobilization. The new Tivaouane platform, chaired by Prefect Mamadou Guèye, brings together all the key stakeholders: administrative authorities, local authorities, health services, community relays, and supply structures.
Its mission will be to plan, propose and implement concrete solutions to improve access to medicines, combat shortages, strengthen the skills of stakeholders and, above all, combat the illicit sale of pharmaceutical products.
The ambition is clear: to make Senegal an independent and credible pharmaceutical player. The National Health and Social Development Plan (2019-2028) also includes this sovereignty as a major strategic objective.
With the rise of the ARP and the mobilization of national actors, Senegal could well become a model for West Africa in terms of production.
