Tension systolique : risques d'infarctus, AVC... Pourquoi faut-il s'inquiéter de cette donnée après 40 ans ?
In France, cardiovascular and neurovascular diseases account for more than one in five deaths each year among adults. The risk increases from the age of 40.
Systolic blood pressure, or hypertension, is the most common chronic disease worldwide. It corresponds to an abnormally high pressure of blood against the walls of the arteries. Certain factors can contribute to its development, such as age, obesity, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Although treatments exist to stabilize it, systolic blood pressure is not adequately managed and monitored in France. Twenty percent of the country's hypertensive population does not receive treatment. Of the 12 million people treated for this condition, 50% are not receiving sufficient care.
This lack of care can have significant consequences, such as increased workload for the heart (heart failure), a significant cardiovascular risk (heart attack, stroke, etc.) and an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
Risks starting from age 40
A Belgian study conducted by Mensura carried out more than 450,000 medical examinations on 230,000 workers aged 40 and over between 2019 and 2023. Five factors were examined: age, sex, blood pressure, smoking and overweight (BMI).
The findings of this study reveal that workers aged 40 and over are at risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke within ten years. This figure represents a 9% increase compared to five years ago. The risk of high blood pressure also increases with age, reaching 40% for those aged 65 and 90% for those aged 85.
The researchers also analyzed the sectors where the risk of cardiovascular disease is highest. Workers in physically demanding sectors such as construction and logistics are most exposed to the risks of heart attack and stroke.
To avoid complications, it is important to see your doctor for checkups or if you experience any symptoms. Health insurance also reminds you that if your blood pressure is too high, very regular monitoring is required to manage and adjust your medication.
