Explosion mortelle à l'UCAD : les premiers éléments de l'enquête
A tragedy struck Pavilion A of Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar on Thursday, causing the death of one student and seriously injuring two others.
Around 7:00 a.m., as reported by L'Observateur in its Friday, October 31st edition, powerful explosions occurred in the lobby of Pavilion A, sowing panic among the residents. In a survival instinct, several students on the upper floors attempted to flee by climbing over the balconies. Among them, El Hadji Mouhamadou Niang, a third-year undergraduate student in the Arabic department, born in March 2003, fell heavily, hitting his head, and died during his evacuation to the Main Hospital. His classmates, Ousseynou Gaye and Djiby Diagne, were admitted to the emergency room with serious upper limb injuries.
Origin of the explosion
According to a report by the Directorate of Technical and Scientific Police (SDPTS), consulted by the newspaper of the Future Media Group (GFM), the incident resulted from an electrical fault. Two electric motorcycles, commonly known as "Chinese motorcycles," had been plugged in simultaneously in the lobby of the pavilion. The electrical cable of the outlet could not handle this load due to the absence of a regulator, causing a short circuit followed by an explosion, the same source indicates.
The two motorcycle owners (science students and first-year Master's students) stated that they regularly plugged their vehicles into the charging station at that location. However, COUD security confirmed that they had repeatedly prohibited and recorded these connections.
The investigation is ongoing, and the two injured students should be interviewed as soon as their condition allows, according to the Gfm news outlet.
