Mondial 2026 : « Il y a danger pour ... »
In an interview with L'Observateur, René Girard, former assistant coach of the French team in 2002, comments on the draw for the 2026 World Cup, which places Senegal in the "group of death" alongside France, Norway and the winner of the intercontinental play-off (Iraq, Bolivia and Suriname).
For Girard, returning to Senegal immediately evokes the defeat of 2002. "Bad memories... There is danger for France," he warns.
The source speaking to the Groupe Futurs Médias newspaper emphasizes that Senegal will be a difficult opponent, especially since many of its players play in the French league: "They know us, but I think we know them well too [...]. We will have to be very vigilant."
The former coach believes this match will be "a very tough battle" and that mental strength will be essential. He recalls that in 2002, Zidane's injury during a friendly match "shook" the French team, giving Senegal an advantage.
Norway: a cold rigor
Regarding Norway, Girard warns: this team could be "more complete and cause us trouble." The Norwegians play a simple and straightforward style of football, combining discipline and physical preparation. "Not at all a team to underestimate," he cautions.
Roger Lemerre's former assistant concluded that this group looks exciting and that their fourth opponent will likely be a surprise team, less well-known and difficult to prepare for. "We'll need to be mentally strong to approach this World Cup."

Nos cousins français ont hâte de laver l'affront de 2002. Beaucoup de visilance et de sérénité.
Bonne chance aux lions du Sénégal.
