Pape Thiaw : « La polyvalence de certains joueurs est une véritable chance pour l’équipe »
The publication of the list of 28 Lions selected for the World Cup preparation has raised several questions, particularly regarding the inclusion of three players who play at right-back. Speaking to the press, national coach Pape Thiaw clarified his choices, emphasizing what he considers a crucial element: the versatility of his players.
The Senegalese coach first reminded everyone that the current list is not final. "You have seen a list of 28 players. As I have already explained, two players will leave the group before the start of the competition. FIFA requires a final list of 26 players and we will naturally respect this regulation," he stated.
Regarding the large number of right-backs selected, Pape Thiaw believes that the analysis should not be limited to the players' preferred positions. For him, the strength of his squad lies precisely in the ability of several players to play in different positions.
"This selection is a great opportunity because it offers a lot of versatility," he explained. The coach specifically mentioned Ilaye Camara, whom he considers capable of playing in several positions and not just right-back.
He also highlighted Antoine Mendy's qualities. "Antoine can play in the center of the defense as well as on the right side. This is an important asset for a coach in such a demanding competition," Pape Thiaw emphasized.
The Lions' coach finally addressed Krépin Diatta, whose versatility has been recognized for several years in the national team. "Krépin is a tactically intelligent player. Apart from center forward and goalkeeper, he can practically play anywhere on the pitch," he said.
