Dakar célèbre Pierre Laurent, roi du jiu-jitsu brésilien à 65 ans
On September 2, the Dakar Olympic Club vibrated with a special energy during a ceremony marking the triumphant return of Pierre Laurent, Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion in the over-60 super heavyweight category. More than just a trophy presentation, this event celebrated excellence, hard work, and the transmission of martial arts values in Senegal.
A glorious return
Pierre Laurent, a Frenchman who has lived in Senegal for over 40 years, made history by winning the world title at the 2025 World Masters in Las Vegas (August 28-30, 2025), after victories in Lisbon, Barcelona, Orlando (Pan-African Championships) and a second place in Brazil. At 65 years old and weighing 91 kg, he won in the super heavyweight category (-100 kg, brown belt, Master 7) thanks to his mobility and strategy, including precise distance control and ground control. "Of all my championships, this medal satisfied me the most," he said emotionally.
Senegalese training in the spotlight
This celebration highlighted the quality of jiu-jitsu training in Senegal, led by the Dakar Olympic BOKK (also known as Bokk Jiu Jitsu). Pierre Laurent praised the technical support: "The training here is on par with that in the West. We have dynamic coaches, airy rooms, equipment, and well-managed sessions twice a week." He highlighted the contribution of his coaches: Tapha, a ground expert; Boubacar, a former judoka specializing in stand-up combat; and Lamine, a skilled technician. With 25 to 30 participants per session, the club positions itself as a center of excellence, promoting intergenerational transmission.
An ambition for youth and the development of sport
Champions from the United States and Geneva shared their expertise, highlighting the potential of Senegalese youth. Master Moustapha Gabar Diop, head of the club, emphasized the need to structure jiu-jitsu in Senegal: “We are fortunate to welcome world champions to train the youngest. Senegal is full of incredible talent, but we need state support to develop infrastructure within the country.” The evening embodied Senegal’s potential in martial arts, proving that investment in local training is paying off. The triumph of Pierre Laurent, husband, father, and grandfather, also a manager at the Terrou-Bi Hotel, symbolizes perseverance and inspires a new generation of fighters.
