Gestion des inondations à Touba : l’ONAS sort la grosse artillerie
The Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation is deploying major resources to free flooded neighborhoods and sites. On August 12, 2025, the Director General of the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS), Mr. Séni DIENE, deployed around forty brand-new trucks. This is the Project for the Acquisition and Renewal of Vacuum Trucks (PARC). It is the result of a partnership between several stakeholders.
"The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has committed to the project for the acquisition and renewal of vacuum trucks (PARC) with the DER and stakeholders in the sanitation sector in Senegal. PARC is a pilot project worth 2 billion CFA francs , co-financed by the Gates Foundation, the DER/FJ and a local commercial bank partnering with the DER, namely the BNDE," states a note from the ONAS Autonomous Sanitation Unit.
These 40 trucks arrive at the right time in the city of Touba where ONAS, the Directorate for Flood Prevention and Management (DGPI), Touba Ca Kanam are throwing all their efforts into the evacuation of rainwater.
The emphasis on pumping operations
These vehicles, which are in addition to the pumping system, will be deployed in homes and other low-lying areas. "These trucks support what is already being done. As you know, we have canals, rainwater drainage networks, and pumping stations. However, these infrastructures do not cover the entire municipal area of Touba. Some homes located in low-lying areas find themselves with stagnant water, beyond the reach of our canals. To alleviate this situation, we have sent a number of trucks to supplement the system," said ONAS Director General, Mr. Séni DIÈNE. He was accompanied by the deputy prefect, firefighters, and ONAS technical teams.
Strategic structures operate at high speed
In Keur Niang and Nguélémou, the pumping system is operating at high flow rates, according to technical teams who have been on high alert for days following the recent rainfall. Accelerating the decline in water levels and freeing up houses and roads remain the objectives to be achieved. To achieve this, 4 pumps are being operated at the 72,000 m3 basin, including 2 of 1260 m3/hour each and 2 of 900 m3/hour each. While at Keur Niang, in addition to the old pumping system, ONAS has operated a new pumping system with a capacity of 1000 m3/hour at a second basin with a capacity of 2000 m3.
These measures take pumping capacity to a new level, which will logically lead to an increase in the volume of water evacuated and consequently the liberation of roads, houses and other flooded sites. Some streets adjacent to the basin have already been liberated.
The main entrance is free again
The effects of the pumping operations are visible. For example, the main entrance to the religious city from Mbacké has been cleared again. Both lanes are used by motorists. It should be noted that opposite the mosque, ONAS has commissioned a new pumping station that pumps water back to the Keur Niang station before it is transported to Keur Niang.
