Crise universitaire : Modou Diagne Fada lance un appel au « sursaut républicain » pour sauver l’année académique
Faced with the ongoing crisis plaguing higher education in Senegal, Modou Diagne Fada, president of the LDR Yessal party, has taken a stand to call for a "republican resurgence" to prevent a lasting paralysis of the university system. In a public statement, the former student movement leader, who recalls having personally experienced the consequences of academic failures and expulsions linked to strikes during his own studies, says he understands "the weight of words and the urgency of action" in a situation he considers alarming.
According to him, the current standoff between the authorities and the students can only lead to a deadlock. He emphasizes that the crisis has gradually spread beyond universities to affect high schools, colleges, and private institutions, increasing uncertainty surrounding the academic year, particularly at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD).
Emergency measures to restore dialogue
Modou Diagne Fada is advocating for concrete measures to create the conditions for a genuine dialogue between the state and students. He emphasizes the need for decisive action to restore trust and allow for the normal resumption of academic activities. Among the priorities he mentions, he cites the release of detained students, which he considers an essential prerequisite for productive dialogue, as well as the withdrawal of law enforcement from university premises to preserve the campus as a "sanctuary of knowledge."
The leader of LDR Yessal also advocates for the reinstatement of student associations, traditional structures for organization and mediation, as well as the reopening of university restaurants, deemed essential for the social well-being of students. He further calls for inclusive and frank discussions between authorities and student representatives, and for the payment of outstanding scholarships to guarantee respect for acquired rights.
A collective mobilization against the blank year
Beyond political divisions, Modou Diagne Fada is calling for collective action to avert the specter of a lost academic year. He believes that only an approach based on compromise, listening, and swift decisions will break the current deadlock. "There is still time to save the academic year," he asserts, urging the government to take the lead in consultations to restore a calm atmosphere within the academic community.
