Cameroun : Que reste-t-il du "courage" d’Issa Tchiroma ?
Three weeks ago, he said he wanted to liberate Cameroon "by any means necessary," even at the cost of his life. Today, it's difficult to even catch a glimpse of him in Garoua, his hometown. Issa Tchiroma, Paul Biya's challenger in the presidential election of October 12, has simply vanished.
He is reported to have fled to Gambia, a small West African country surrounded by Senegal. This escape by the opposition leader, who still contests the results of the October election, clearly does not reflect well on his courage, if indeed he possesses any.
A troop without a general
His supporters would certainly have liked to see him in Cameroon to lead the peaceful resistance he himself announced… “until victory”.
When a general abandons his troops, victory becomes uncertain. What remains of the courage of the man who publicly defied the Biya regime?
Far from his homeland, will he have the means to force the Cameroonian regime to back down? Nothing is less certain, especially since Gambia has already publicly stated that it will not serve as a rear base for subversive actions against Yaoundé.
