Crise à l'UCAD : Le Pr Amath Ndiaye dénonce le sacrifice du social sur l'autel de la dette
The social climate in Senegal is marked by intense tension following the tragic death yesterday of a medical student at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD). This tragedy occurred during violent clashes with law enforcement. In a somber opinion piece, Professor Amath Ndiaye, from the Faculty of Economics and Management (FASEG), offers a critical analysis of the situation.
Faced with the repression, the academic makes a clear observation: force cannot resolve a crisis whose roots are economic. "Yes to maintaining public order, but no to the massacre of students," he insists, before reiterating that "security must never replace social dialogue and political responsibility." For him, the delay in scholarship payments is not merely a technical problem, but "an absolute social emergency" impacting thousands of young people living in precarious circumstances.
The burden of debt and its social consequences
As an economist, Professor Ndiaye analyzes the structural causes of this budgetary impasse. According to him, the state's difficulties in honoring its social commitments stem from fragile management of public funds and crippling debt. "When debt servicing absorbs a growing share of tax revenues and the state refuses to restructure its debts, it finds itself forced to sacrifice its social obligations and essential priorities in favor of debt servicing," he explains.
Finally, the professor-researcher highlights the gap between the institutions' lavish spending and the students' distress. He calls on leaders to set an example to make reforms acceptable. "Yes to economic recovery, but the elites in power must make the first sacrifices," he warns.
To illustrate this striking contrast, he cites the recent acquisition of luxury vehicles at the highest levels of government: "Symbolically, it was difficult to understand buying vehicles worth 50,000,000 FCFA for members of parliament while students are waiting for their scholarships and social tensions are intensifying."
