GDP: slight growth of 0.3% in the second quarter of 2025, according to ANSD

PIB : légère croissance de 0,3% au deuxième trimestre 2025, selon l’Ansd

Senegal's economic activity recorded a slight slowdown in the second quarter of 2025, with a 0.3% increase in real gross domestic product (GDP) adjusted for seasonal variations (Cvs), according to the latest economic report published by the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD), on its official website.

This moderate growth is explained by the underperformance of the primary (-0.6%) and tertiary (-0.5%) sectors, as well as by a drop in taxes net of subsidies on products (-2.9%), which have attenuated the strong dynamics of the secondary sector (+3.2%), according to the agency.

Excluding hydrocarbons, the situation appears more bleak. Indeed, "GDP excluding oil and gas fell by 0.5%, and excluding hydrocarbons and agriculture, the decline was 0.4%," notes this document reviewed by Seneweb.

On the demand side, the external balance drove growth, driven by a 10.2% increase in exports and a 6.5% reduction in imports. In contrast, domestic demand contracted, with a significant drop in gross fixed capital formation (-6.8%) and final consumption down 0.9%.

Exports on the rise

Year-on-year, economic performance remains impressive. ANSD notes that real GDP jumped 11.8% compared to the second quarter of 2024. This rebound is mainly due to strong growth in the secondary sector (+37.7%), followed by the primary sector (+6.7%) and the tertiary sector (+3.3%). Net taxes on products also increased by 3.6%.

However, excluding hydrocarbons, annual growth is much more modest, at 2.5%, reflecting the economy's growing dependence on this sector.

On demand, exports exploded by 46.9%, while gross fixed capital formation increased by 3.7% and final consumption by 3.1%, still compared to the second quarter of 2024. Imports, for their part, fell by 4.7%.

The same source finally informed that the nominal GDP for the quarter stood at 4,701.9 billion FCfa.

Mo niou diakhal . Ces chiffres que distille l'ANSD depuis un moment ressemble à une commande du nouveau régime de thiounés. Le chômage n'a pas du tout baissé comme annoncé la semaine dernière, mais a augmenté au contraire. Peut-on encore parlé de PIB en hausse?

Aie j'ai du mal a comprendre ce resume de la note de conjoncture. Il faut quand meme nous donner le taux de croissance sur pour les six premiers mois et le comparer a l'anner derniere. Ensuite concernant le pib reel en glissement annuel : quel est le taux avant de faire une comparaison a l'annee derniere. Nous savons tous que le secteur des hydrocarbures est l'arbre qui cache la foret. Il existe des anomalies au niveau de la conjoncture economie. Car nous avons une contre performance de l'agricuture qui devait etre la locomotive de la nouvelle politique economique de ce gouvernement en place. Est-ce un effet saisonnier : c'est a dire que la majorite des activites se deroule durant les six dernieres mois de l'annee (la saison agricole)?

Un autre aspect de cette croissance que j'ai oublier de mentionner concerne son impact sur l'emploi et les menages. Car le secteur primaire est celui ou trouve une forte concentration de la population active. Pour les menages nous avons un idee de la tendance avec la baisse de la consmmation.
