Vol de bijoux au Louvre: deux hommes en garde à vue
Two men suspected of involvement in the spectacular jewelry theft at the Louvre Museum on October 19 in Paris were arrested Saturday evening and taken into custody, two sources close to the case said Sunday, confirming information reported by French media.
One of the suspects was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris as he was about to board a plane abroad, according to the daily newspaper Le Parisien and the weekly Paris-Match. The second was arrested shortly afterward in the Paris region, according to Le Parisien.
The two men were taken into custody for organized robbery and criminal conspiracy.
They are suspected of being part of the four-man commando that stole eight of France's crown jewels, estimated at 88 million euros.
Around 9:30 a.m. on October 19, the commando unit set up a forklift at the foot of the museum, located in the center of the French capital, and two men used a cherry picker to hoist themselves up to the gallery housing the jewels. After breaking a window and the display cases, the criminals left on two powerful scooters.
The burglary lasted seven to eight minutes in total.
The investigations, entrusted to the BRB and the Central Office for Combating Trafficking in Cultural Property (OCBC), involve around a hundred investigators.
