Alioune Sall et son épouse placés en garde à vue : Me El Hadj Diouf revient sur l'audition
Former President Macky Sall's younger brother and his wife will spend the night in detention before being brought before the investigating judge of the Financial Judicial Pool for alleged money laundering. Their lawyer, El Hadj Diouf, provided details of their hearing and denounced the proceedings as unjustified.
"Having failed to catch President Macky Sall, today we are hounding his younger brother who has done nothing," declared Me Diouf, referring to the fable of the wolf and the lamb: "Might is right."
The lawyer believes that his client is the victim of a political vendetta targeting the former head of state, who is now beyond the reach of the Senegalese judicial authorities.
The explanations provided to investigators
Before the DIC investigators, Alioune Sall presented documents relating to his business activities. "Mr. Alioune Sall showed that he created a real estate company with his wife, who holds 1% of the capital, while Alioune Sall holds 92%," explained Mr. Diouf. The lawyer clarified the division of roles within this structure: "He appointed his wife as manager of the company because he does not have enough time to devote to the daily administration of the company. The manager, his wife, also gave him a power of attorney that allows him to negotiate and discuss with the company's partners."
According to Mr. Diouf, "as a seasoned businessman, Mr. Sall provided all the evidence of the real estate transactions concerning his real estate company."
A CENTIF report contested
The origin of this procedure lies in a report from the National Financial Information Processing Unit (CENTIF). "CENTIF looked into the accounts of Mr. Sall and Mrs. Sall's company, and CENTIF suspected irregular transfers or payments," explained Mr. Diouf.
But for the lawyer, the supporting documents provided by the couple dispel these suspicions. "When Mr. Sall and his wife show that everything went according to plan, they shouldn't have spent the night at the police station. They showed that all the operations were regular, normal, and legal. So, spending the night at the police station is a mess."
The black robe was confident about the outcome of the proceedings: "We seriously believe that the President of the College of Investigating Judges of the Financial Judicial Pool will, tomorrow, release Mr. Sall and his wife, because there is nothing to whip a cat about."
Mr. El Hadj Diouf also issued a solemn warning: "We must stop playing with people's freedom. This country is a time-honored democracy, a respected democracy, the showcase of democracy in Africa. But this democracy is cracking." Before adding: "We often say in our country that we prefer to let criminals go than arrest innocent people."
No connection with the Petro-Tim affair
Maitre Diouf also insisted on denying any connection with the oil scandal that had tarnished Alioune Sall. "Mr. Sall was attacked over oil. People thought it was the Petro-Tim affair; it fueled debate all day long. It's false! It's manipulation," he insisted.
According to him, "people lied about Mr. Sall. He was portrayed as a thief, a crook. Today, this grotesque lie has been erased. They wanted to bring him back to give credence to this lie, by saying that it's the Petro-Tim affair, it smells of gas, it smells of oil."
The lawyer was categorical: "False, completely false , we didn't talk about oil for a single second. Honestly, everyone is comfortable, including even the investigating police officers. Nothing can be blamed on the Sall couple."
Presentation to the investigating judge this Friday
The Sall couple, assisted by a pool of lawyers including Ousmane Thiam and El Hadj Diouf, are expected to appear before the investigating judge of the Financial Judicial Pool this Friday for alleged money laundering. The defense hopes to secure the immediate release of their clients, believing that the case file contains no incriminating evidence.
