Crise dans les médias : Le CDEPS propose des solutions
Faced with the difficulties (tax debt, job losses, deteriorating working conditions for journalists, and the closure of certain media outlets) that are stifling media outlets, Mamadou Ibra Kane, president of the Council of Press Broadcasters and Publishers in Senegal (CDEPS), declares that media outlets must review their business models. On this subject, he presents some possible solutions.
"Media companies are starved of resources in Senegal. To rebuild their fortunes, they must review their economic model by pooling resources and reviewing their forms of entrepreneurship in the media sector," the journalist said on Sud FM.
For Mr. Kane, "instruments for mobilizing resources at the national, international, and even popular level of financing are necessary so that small businesses can have sufficient funds," while calling for the establishment of an advertising agency for the pooling of different press companies.
"The digital transformation of the media is a necessity to mobilize resources greater than the Press Support and Development Fund (which varies between 4 and 5 billion CFA francs) by reaching out to the global market," he added.
The economic, financial, and social situation of Senegalese media is unprecedented in the history of Senegal since its independence. This press crisis is, first and foremost, caused by Covid-19. Since 2020, media companies have lost almost 70 and 90% of their turnover.
