During a meeting with media executives, government spokesperson Marie Rose Khady Faye spoke frankly. She called on media stakeholders to demonstrate greater responsibility, innovation, and autonomy in managing their media companies. "When you invested your money in media companies, the state was unaware. You, particularly Maimouna Ndour Faye, did not seek the state's advice to create 7TV, and the same is true for your peers," she said, recalling that creating a media outlet is a personal and entrepreneurial choice.
For Marie Rose Khady Faye, it is up to press executives to ensure the sustainability of their businesses. "A press company must fight to survive, just like others," she insisted. She compared this situation to that of the Senegalese economy: "Senegal's debt today represents 119% of GDP, but we continue to pay it, whatever the cost. It's difficult, but we meet our commitments." The spokesperson called on the press to take responsibility and not expect everything from the state. She questioned the effectiveness of the press support fund, wondering if it could really solve the sector's structural problems.
According to her, the real challenge is to ensure the sustainability of press companies, a challenge that relies primarily on the skills and vision of their managers. Marie Rose Khady Faye also proposed the creation of a map of press companies, "done by real professionals," to better understand the realities of the sector. "You are responsible for heads of families and have a decisive role: transmitting information," she emphasized.
She advocated for responsible state support, while rejecting any logic of welfare. "Don't count on the state to give you free money. A country without a press cannot progress, but we need a responsible, free, and engaged press. It's a fight, and all possibilities exist; if necessary, we will discuss it every week," she concluded.
