Sédhiou: Quand les ruminants envahissent l'hôpital régional
The presence of stray domestic animals, particularly small ruminants (goats and sheep), is a recurring problem at the Sedhiou Regional Hospital. For such a sensitive facility, it goes beyond a simple inconvenience to a serious threat to public safety and hygiene.
The unexpected presence of stray animals in corridors, courtyards, or near entrances creates an immediate danger. Patients, especially those who are frail, elderly, or have limited mobility, may trip over animals, their excrement, or moved equipment, resulting in fractures or worsening of their condition.
Animals can damage hospital equipment such as cables, garbage cans and vegetation, thus disrupting the proper functioning of services.
A herd can block access for ambulances or rescue vehicles, compromising the speed and efficiency of emergency response.
In addition to this, there is the noise nuisance, with the noise and agitation of the animals disturbing the patients' rest.
From a health perspective, this can spread zoonotic diseases or fecal and urinary contamination, especially since excrement and urine deposited randomly by animals near entrances, or even inside unprotected areas, constitute a major source of bacterial and viral contamination. This waste impairs air quality, attracts disease-carrying insects, and makes sanitation virtually impossible.
